Nu Colombia Launches “Modo Tranqui,” a new security feature to protect customers from unauthorized transactions

The initiative, inspired by Brazil's successful "Modo Rua," empowers customers to protect their money in the event of phone loss or theft

Bogotá, August 21, 2025 – Nu Colombia announces the launch of “Modo Tranqui”, a security tool that offers customers greater control and protection by safeguarding against unauthorized transactions when the person is away from home, work, or other usual places, even if their phone falls into the wrong hands. This initiative, already available to a group of customers, is inspired by the success of “Modo Rua” (Street Mode) launched by Nu Brasil.

Modo Tranqui allows Nu Colombia customers to set a maximum limit for transfers (ACH, PSE, internal) and other digital transactions. The feature is easy to activate: the user simply defines one or more Wi-Fi networks as “safe” within the app. If a customer attempts a transaction above their set limit while not connected to one of these networks, the app will require additional identity authentication, such as facial recognition, to authorize the transaction.

“At Nu, security is one of our most important pillars, and we are constantly innovating to proactively protect our customers. With Modo Tranqui, we are not only offering a new layer of protection, but we are also empowering them to be in control,” said Santiago Matamoros, Nu Colombia’s Product Director.

The feature is a prime example of how Nu uses technology to prioritize security and simplify customer experiences. In Brazil, where it was launched as “Modo Rua,” the feature has proven to be highly relevant and has been adopted by over 4 million active users, earning recognition as a key innovation in banking security.

In addition to Modo Tranqui, Nu also offers a suite of existing security measures, including:

  • Automatic Defenses: Intelligent algorithms that understand customer account and card usage patterns. If unusual behavior is detected, they proactively block transactions as a precaution.
  • Device Authentication: Ensures that only customers can access their accounts from their trusted devices.
  • In-app Incident Reporting: A simple and direct way to report any suspicious activity and track its status.
  • Card Features: Full control over payment methods, with the ability to lock and unlock physical and virtual cards, activate or deactivate contactless functionality, and create virtual cards that expire in one day.
  • 24/7 Customer Service: A team of specialists is available around the clock via chat and phone to resolve sensitive issues.

All of these features, combined with fundamental security measures like PINs and passwords, reinforce Nu’s commitment to empowering its customers with robust and easy-to-use security tools.
