Nubank announces the opening of Nu Cine Copan in São Paulo

Viva do Brasil is a partner in the project and responsible for the revitalization of Oscar Niemeyer's architectural landmark

São Paulo, February 4, 2026 – Nubank, one of the world’s largest digital financial services platforms, has announced its sponsorship for the reopening of the historic Cine Copan, now renamed Nu Cine Copan. Located on the ground floor of the iconic Copan Building—designed by Oscar Niemeyer—the cinema will return to operation after nearly four decades of inactivity, restoring one of São Paulo’s most emblematic cultural landmarks.

The initiative, in partnership with Viva do Brasil, reinforces Nubank’s strategy of promoting experiences that go beyond financial services and align with their customers lifestyles. Beyond its symbolic and cultural impact, the project represents an investment in the revitalization of downtown São Paulo and reflects a commitment to generating value for the inhabitants of the city where the company is headquartered.

“São Paulo is the city where Nubank was born 12 years ago. Supporting the reopening of what is now Nu Cine Copan is a move that combines our appreciation for our customers with a desire to expand our positive impact, giving back to the people of São Paulo a space for connection, art, and culture. We want Nu customers to feel like they are part of this history,” says Juliana Roschel, CMO of Nubank.

For José Aragão, CEO of Viva do Brasil, the project is a gesture that goes far beyond physical construction: “Reopening Cine Copan is more than restoring a cinema. It is giving a piece of the city back to itself. Every layer of this building carries the stories of those who lived it and those who dreamed of it. Now, we want this space to pulse again as a meeting point for art and belonging for everyone.”

The New Nu Cine Copan

The rebirth of Nu Cine Copan will have its first phase between February and April 2026, when the public will be invited to occupy the venue in its current state of transition. During this period, the space will host the play “Hamlet, sonhos que virão” (Hamlet, dreams to come), starring Gabriel Leone in the lead role and directed by Rafael Gomes, for a 69-session season running Wednesday through Sunday. The production features costumes by Alexandre Herchcovitch, musical direction by Antônio Pinto, and promotional photography by Bob Wolfenson.

Starting in May 2026, civil works and installations will begin, continuing until June 2027. This phase will upgrade access points, the foyer, the projection room, and common areas, including full accessibility. Following this, Nu Cine Copan will officially reopen as a multipurpose cinema and a high-impact hub for the Brazilian audiovisual industry, equipped to host festivals, special premieres, Q&A sessions, artist talks, and events.

The Nu Cine Copan will be part of a larger complex featuring boulevard access, dining options, a bar, a shop, and spaces for conferences and events. As part of the sponsorship, Nubank’s more than 112 million customers in Brazil will enjoy exclusive benefits, including half-price tickets for all sessions.

Designed to be a new benchmark in cinema, Nu Cine Copan will feature approximately 440 seats and a 17-meter wide LED screen paired with a state-of-the-art Dolby Atmos sound system, offering unprecedented levels of brightness, contrast, audio fidelity, and sensory immersion.

Funding for the project comes from a mix of private investment from Viva do Brasil and sponsorship from Nubank via cultural incentive laws and programs.

A Cultural Hub in the Heart of São Paulo

Inaugurated in 1970, Cine Copan grew alongside the rise of street cinemas in the capital and was born an icon. The press at the time highlighted its boldness, architectural beauty, and luxurious character.

Now, Nu Cine Copan consolidates a broader cultural project already underway at the Copan building, where Pivô has operated for over 15 years managing the mezzanine—the space housing the foyer. Founded in 2012, Pivô is an institution dedicated to contemporary art, research, and cultural experimentation, serving as a partner to Viva do Brasil and Nubank in this venture.

Together, Nu Cine Copan and Pivô expand the cultural axis of downtown São Paulo and enable the restoration of the foyer’s original design by Oscar Niemeyer, now fully integrated with the cinema. For the first time, the 1,500 m² space will operate in an integrated manner, recovering its original purpose as an area for circulation, gathering, and social interaction.

By returning the cinema to its original use, Nubank and Viva do Brasil reaffirm their commitment to democratizing access to culture, valuing social and cultural heritage, and creating welcoming, diverse, and memorable spaces.
