Nu’s Pix experience in Brazil paves the way for Colombia’s instant payment revolution with Bre-B
The new instant payment system will allow instant, free, and secure money transfers between any entity
Jul 14 , 2025
Bogotá, Colombia, July 14, 2025 – Colombia is preparing for an unprecedented financial transformation with the arrival of Bre-B, the new instant payment system from the Banco de la República that will allow instant, free, and secure money transfers between any entity. Nu Colombia is stepping up as a key player in this revolution, leveraging its rich experience with Pix in Brazil.
Bre-B aims to tear down barriers, allowing money to arrive in seconds, and promotes total interoperability through the use of “keys.”
Nu’s unique experience and preparation for Bre-B
Nu has prepared for the arrival of Bre-B based on its solid experience in Brazil, particularly in the implementation and leadership of Pix, that country’s instant payment system.
Over the past few months, product, engineering, design, and other teams have collaborated intensely to develop the best Bre-B experience in the market. They have focused on the needs of customers in the country, creating an intuitive and frictionless platform. Their goal has been to ensure that the interaction with Bre-B within the application is fluid and secure, thus facilitating the movement of money for users.
They have also made a great effort in the pedagogy of keys, which they will continue to do in the coming months.
Santiago Matamoros, Product Director of Nu Colombia, stated: “The launch of Bre-B marks a decisive moment for the country. This is not just a new payment system; it is the arrival of the future of finance and a fundamental shift towards a more transparent, efficient, and ultimately more equitable financial landscape.” He added: “Our experience at Nu, with customers in 100% of Colombia’s departments and more than 90% of the country’s municipalities, has taught us that digital products that are easy for anyone with a cell phone and internet connection to use are key.”
Bre-B: The simplicity of “Keys”
With Bre-B, transfers will be as simple as sending a message. “Keys”—like a cell phone number, ID number, email address, or the Nu Key—will allow users to identify destination accounts without needing to memorize long numbers.
Santiago Matamoros highlighted: “Now, you just need them to share their key, enter it into the Nu app, choose the amount, confirm with your PIN, and you’re done.” This flexible system adapts to users’ daily lives, making it possible to receive payments from any institution.
Nu’s pioneering Pix experience in Brazil lays the foundation for Bre-B in Colombia
Nu’s approach to Bre-B isn’t just theoretical; it’s built on its practical experience with Pix in Brazil. This instant payment system has revolutionized cash usage and boosted financial inclusion there, and Nu has been a central figure in that transformation.
Nubank, Nu Colombia’s holding, is a key participant in Pix, processing over 2 billion Pix transactions per month, which accounts for one in every three transactions in Brazil. This track record has given Nu deep insights into the implementation, ease of use, and social impact of large-scale instant payment systems.
