Bogota, June 13, 2023 – Nubank, one of the world’s largest digital banking platforms, announced that as of June 20, Marcela Torres will serve as the new General Manager of Nu Colombia, its subsidiary in the country.
Prior to joining Nu, Marcela worked for nearly five years at Uber as General Manager for the Andean region, served as General Manager of Colombia, and as Regional Manager of Strategy and Planning. During her time at Uber, she positioned the region as an innovation hub globally, creating new products and services and launching new markets. Before Uber, Marcela worked for eight years at McKinsey & Company, serving clients in the financial sector across the region. She also co-founded a microcredit company to provide unbanked entrepreneurs with access to financial services.
Marcela is also part of the Women In Connection platform, from which she has managed several initiatives to promote gender equality in corporate environments, and has been recognized as one of the 100 Most Powerful Women in Colombia by Forbes. She is an industrial engineer from the Universidad de Los Andes in Colombia and has an MBA from IE Business School in Spain.
The new General Manager joins Nu Colombia at a vital moment for the local operation: the company recently celebrated its two-year anniversary and announced its plan to invest nearly $2 billion pesos (US $450 million) by 2025, in addition to having reached 635,000 customers by March 2023. Nu is also preparing to increase its product portfolio in Colombia.
“Marcela has an impressive background helping global companies scale across Latin America. Her unique perspective on growth and innovation will undoubtedly be critical for achieving our ambitious goals in the country in the upcoming years. We are betting heavily on Colombia building the future of financial services,” said Cristina Junqueira, co-founder and Chief Growth Officer of Nubank.
“I am thrilled to join this exciting company that, in only two years of local operation, has become a reference in financial services in Colombia. It is an honor to be part of this team, and I am sure that we will continue to grow with our credit card and with new products that we will be able to offer by making the regulated entity operational. We will continue strengthening the local team and our portfolio to keep transforming the Colombians’ lives,” said Marcela.
