Nubank is celebrating ten years this month. A decade ago we began to take the first steps of a revolution driven by nonconformity. How was it possible that there were no alternatives to such a complex system that took away people’s time, money, and opportunities? How couldn’t anyone do anything about it? In 2014, when I talked to David, Cristina, and Ed for the first time, it was the questions that kept them awake — and the real willingness to answer them — that made me say yes to a gigantic project that started in a small house in São Paulo.
Yes, at the time, the dream of transforming a market that was so unfair to consumers did not match the available resources. Even so, the decision to exchange a safe career in an investment bank for a mission focused on empowering people, giving access to services that until then only a few could enjoy, seemed obvious. There was no guarantee of success, but there was a huge challenge, and the results would have a real impact on society.
On May 31, 2014, I responded to that job offer with an email that said: “It is with great pleasure that I accept the offer to work at Nubank. Thank you very much for the opportunity, I will not let you down”. With that, I became Nubanker number 10, and many years later here we are, at more than 80 million customers. I often revisit a list of countless experiences that taught me that the ability to connect with people and understand the issues that affect them on a daily basis are the secret ingredients of innovation.
It’s an honor to be able to be a part of this story!
Now, our dreams expand and are renewed. With 10 years of existence and almost half of the Brazilian adult population with us, Nubank is facing endless opportunities not yet explored, pains not solved. I am sure that however great our ambitions are, we will once again exceed expectations. We will not disappoint you.
Vitor Olivier, CTO and Nubanker number 10
