Alô Protegido: Nubank launches call-blocking feature to avoid scams

With an extra layer of protection, Nubank's app makes it difficult for third parties to call potential scam victims pretending to be the company's customer service center

São Paulo, November 13, 2023 – In another step to protect its customers, Nubank announces a new security tool in its app: Alô Protegido. The feature helps avoid scams through phone calls by automatically blocking suspicious calls from fake customer service centers. Currently, the blocked calls are those in which scammers “disguise” the origin phone number, masking it with Nubank’s contact number. The company is continuing to work on further developments of the initiative to provide even more security tools to its customers.

The launch is part of the campaign #PareceMasNãoÉoNubank, which aims to alert people to everyday situations that may seem related to Nubank but are not. Nubank is the first financial institution in the world to offer this type of service to customers. Initially, the protection was launched for Android users.

“We want to go beyond educational campaigns and provide an effective solution to combat fraudulent calls and further protect our customers. With that in mind, we developed Alô Protegido. The idea is to offer smart alerts and automatically block suspicious numbers, preventing users from becoming victims of scams and fraud,” says Fabiola Marchiori, VP of Engineering at Nubank.

In practice, with Alô Protegido activated, the app automatically blocks the call if a customer receives a call from a fake center using Nubank’s number. No additional app needs to be downloaded or any program installed to activate the protection. The customer simply needs to access the “Security” menu in the Nu app and click the Alô Protegido option, then click on the button to activate and “Allow” to authorize call management through the Nu app.

Benefits of Alô Protegido

Intelligent blocking: Automatic barrier for suspicious numbers and false customer service centers.

Agile and verified support: Authenticated, reliable, and faster calls with Nu support.

It is worth noting that this is an additional layer of security aimed at making it difficult for people to fall for social engineering scams. If in doubt about any phone approach, it is recommended that the person hangs up and contacts the company through official channels. In addition, Nubank does not request that people download apps, perform operations, or change passwords to carry out any actions over the phone.
